Season for Nonviolence - 2010 is Accotink Church’s 5th year of observing the Season for Nonviolence (Jan. 30 through April 4) marking the memorial anniversaries of the deaths of Mahatma Ghandi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Reflecting the spirit of these renowned peacemakers, our focus this year is: Listening and Speaking to Create Peace. How we speak and listen can open or close doors, heal or hurt, create suffering or joy, and ultimately determines our own degree of happiness and of those with whom we interact. Take time to note and post in your home the Practice thought of the week you will find in the Sunday insert or brochure. May these nine weeks of intentional reflection and practice take us further along the life-long journey of peacemaking. (AND…Mark your calendar: Sunday, March 14 from 2-4 pm, AUUC: “Public Forum: Listening and Speaking to Create Peace…promoting understanding within families and communities”, Presenter: Robert Wentworth, Certified NVC Facilitator)

Please start thinking about an organization, program or activity that you'd like to recommend our Social Justice Committee considers as a recipient for next year. In April, selection guidelines and nomination forms will become available to give all the members of our congregation an opportunity for your input in this successful program where we put our faith into action.
One of the several efforts supported by the Social Justice Committee to increase affordable housing in Northern Virginia is (HfH). As part of their program, HfH operates several ReStores in the Northern Virginia area. ReStores sell new and used building materials to the public which have been donated by local builders, retail businesses, & suppliers. These are sold at 50-90% below retail prices and the profits help support the HfH construction projects.
One of the ReStores is on 7770-G Richmond Highway in Alexandria VA; if you are interested in volunteering, please call 703.360.6700. A new ReStore has recently opened at 4262G Entre Ct in Chantilly, VA; if you are interested in volunteering please visit the ReStore website for more information: www.restorenova.org or contact Virginia Patton, vpatton@habitatnova.org.

RE Assistants Needed. We are counting on you to volunteer. If each member or friend signs up one or two times, it will mean our regular lead teachers have a reasonable load to bear. There is a variety of positions available for an hour during or after Sunday services. Sign up in RE resource binder in the gallery or see the DLE.
The Lifespan Education Committee is in need of a host of volunteers to teach and/or assist our cooperative religious education program for children and youth Sunday mornings this Fall and Spring. If you can help watch young children in the nursery, teach a class, or share your talents for limited lessons, please contact AUUC's DLE, Sarah Edelson Baskin, for more information.
We are looking for kind hearts to help in the nursery during Sunday services to accommodate some of our members and guests with young infants. If you would like more information on the nursery responsibilities or you would like to volunteer one Sunday, please contact our DLE Sarah Edelson.
