DRAFT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES May 2005

2006 – 2010
Goal 1.0 AUUC shall increase the level of Leadership Development in the lay leaders and increase the opportunities for lay leadership growth.
Obj. 1.1
By having all Board of Trustees members attend JPD-sponsored Board Member Training. Each year, at least four members of the Board of Trustees (including the current youth member) will participate in this training, the object being to have all second- and third-year members attend this training by the time they enter their second year on the Board and all first-year members attend this training during their “freshman” year.
Obj. 1.2
By having all Committee Chairs and Task Force Leaders attend JPD-sponsored Committee Chair Training. Each year, at least 25% of the sitting Committee Chairs will participate in this training, the object being to have at least 80% of the sitting Committee Chairs and Task Force Leaders attend this training by the time Committee Chairs enter their second year and all Task Force Leaders attend this training during their first year.
Obj. 1.3
By having a well-trained, church-wide Committee and Task Force membership attend JPD-sponsored Committee Chair Training and/or local/cluster Committee Member training. Each year, ate least 20% of all Committee and Task Force members will participate in this training, the object being to have at least 60% of all Committee and Task Force members attend this training by the time they have been members for two years (Committee) or one year (Task Force).
Obj. 1.4
By having all lay leaders participate in some form of education course(s) designed to enhance their spiritual growth. Each year 40% of the lay leaders (Board of Trustees members, Committee Chairs, Task Force Leaders, and Committee Members) will participate in this training, which may take the form, for example, of Covenant Group membership or formal Adult Education courses in Unitarian Universalist history or modern thought, Earth-Based Philosophy, Ecumenical History and Current Trends, or any other such related opportunities. The object of this training is to enhance the spiritual growth of the congregation’s lay leadership such that by the end of the initial five-year period, approximately 75% of the lay leadership will have participated.
Obj 1.5
By having the council develop by 2010 a purchasing policy that aligns our church purchasing habits with our UU principles in both the political and environmental aspects of social justice.
Obj. 1.6
By having committees develop a plan for succession of committee leadership
Goal 2. AUUC will strive to build a community of caring through offering a variety of social and spiritual programs.
Obj. 2.1
By offering a variety adult education programs aimed at interests gained through a survey of the congregation
Obj. 2.2
By offering family night programs designed to build community among the church families every other month.
Obj. 2.3
By offering two programs a year designed around a social awareness issue so that socialization, and raising awareness are involved.
Obj. 2.4
By offering programs designed to help congregation members to develop ministry skills, offered once in the fall and again in the spring.
Obj. 2.5
By developing interchurch activities which pair our youth groups with other youth in the area in social and social justice events at least three times a year.

By taking part in the Safe Congregations Workshop
Obj 2.7
By completing the updated Welcoming Congregations Workshop.
Obj. 2.8
By inviting all youth 14 and older to participate in any church- wide, decision -making process. The youth will be encouraged to attend town meetings and give input to congregational issues either in an adult forum or within their youth group meetings. Furthermore, youth 14 and older will be encouraged to attend fundraisers including the canvas events.
Obj 2.9
By developing an intentional program that turns new members into active members by using methods to include but not limited to a mentoring program.
Goal 3 AUUC shall increase the richness and value of the Members’and Friends’ church experience.
Obj 3.1
By involving Members and Friends in at least one small group ministry program (i.e. covenant group, R.E. programs, choir, committee participation, etc.) by the end of 2006, 60%; by the end of 2007, 65%; by the end of 2008, 70%; by the end of 2009, 75; by the end of 2010 80%.
Obj 3.2
By increasing music in the Sunday services beyond the customary congregational hymns and piano prelude, offertory interlude, and postlude to have at least one special vocal and/or instrumental piece twice each month.
Obj 3.3
By reacting to analysis of telephone or e-mail “interviews” of Members and Friends who have become inactive, those analysis having been reported to the Council and the Board each May and November with recommendations.
Obj 3.4
By reacting to surveys each May of Members’ and Friends’ “satisfaction” with the Church and their comments, summaries of those surveys ad comments having been reported to the Council and Board by the end of each June with recommendations.
Obj 3.5
By developing a task force of Council members to evaluate yearly progress made on the goals and objectives as written in the 5 year plan. This report being summarized and recommendations given at the Board/Council Retreat each year.
Obj.3.6
By developing a ten-year depreciation plan for house and grounds issues that will be reflected in a yearly maintenance plan. This plan will be provided for in the house and grounds budget and the depreciation fund.
Obj. 3.7
By maintaining a safe physical environment through: meeting health, safety, and fire codes yearly. A plan for meeting these codes shall be included in yearly maintenance.
Obj 3.8
By developing a 5- year aesthetics plan that synchronizes with the yearly maintenance plan.
Goal 4 AUUC shall assume a more visible and influential role in our immediate community
Obj. 4.1
By hosting at least two events (e.g. forum, concert, etc.) each year specifically designed to promote to attract possible “kindred spirits” who are not yet necessarily familiar with our Church and Unitarian Universalism
Obj. 4.2
By increasing participation in public events that support identified community needs, and increasing donations to community resource organizations that provide for individuals in the community.
Obj. 4.3
By developing an interchurch cluster program among the Northern VA UU Churches.
Obj 4.4
By exploring the possibility of developing an interfaith alliance (caregiver’s network) or ecumenical council.

Why AUUC Chartered the Mission Task Force: to develop a mission and values statement, identify church goals and build a five-year plan for achieving those goals.
