Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church Homeschoolers

LogoThe modern homeschool movement is rooted in the ideas of liberal education reformers such as Ivan Illich and John Holt, who promoted new ways of thinking about education in the 1960's and 1970's. It wasn't until the mid-1980's that the heavy conservative Christian influx began. This was largely a result of the closing of many Christian private schools, due to unfavorable changes in tax laws. Some leaders of this second wave went so far as to take over the existing inclusive, grassroots groups and make them exclusive and hierarchical. For almost 20 years, these "pillars" of Christian homeschooling were the self-appointed voice of the community, but now the pendulum swings the other way, with a third wave. Increasing numbers of families are choosing to homeschool for liberal ideals, such as free thinking, peace and justice, and community involvement.

UU homeschoolers choose this ecucational option for many reasons, including as an expression of our faith. UU homeschooling supports the inherent worth and dignity of every person; allows more room for justice, equity and compassion in human relations; fosters greater acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth; kindles a free and responsible search for truth and meaning, and more.

Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church Homeschoolers invite you to explore the world of UU homeschooling, and we welcome you questions and company.

"The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil. It is not for you to choose what he shall know, what he shall do. It is chosen and foreordained and he only holds the key to his own secret."

-Unitarian minister Ralph Waldo Emerson

"What is most important and valuable about the home as a base for children's growth into the world is not that it is a better school than the schools but that it isn't school at all...It is a natural , organic, central, fundamental human institution; one might easily and rightly say the foundation of all other human institutions."

John Holt, in "Teach Your Own"
