Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church was founded in 1980 by members of area UU churches eager for a Unitarian Universalist presence in the Burke/Springfield area of Fairfax County. Their, and our, dream of a church home was realized with the dedication of the building on Lakehaven Court in February 1995.
That dream still goes on, every Sunday, as our ever-widening circle of friends continues to ask questions, share new insights, and learn from each other. We are a community of diverse and wondrous souls, joined in a common goal: to open our hearts, our minds, and our spirits to the adventure of life.
AUUC is an open and nurturing community of faith. We foster each individual's spiritual journey, and we share common values while honoring a diversity of beliefs. Together, we cherish our connection to nature, and we act to transform our world into a more embracing and just community.
We the members of Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church, affirm the vision of this congregation for the next five years to include the following elements:
We are a religious community committed to nurturing spiritual growth of all children and adults through shared experiences, ministering to each other, and drawing from a variety of common and different beliefs to encourage creative expression and a lifetime of learning.
Worship is the heart and soul of this church. Through a rich variety of rituals, traditions, music, and opportunities for participation, worship promotes and affirms our Unitarian Universalist principles. It nurtures and challenges us emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
Our membership is dynamic, diverse, and multi-generational. We value, support, and nurture each individual, welcoming new members and friends into our programs and community. We actively create opportunities to participate in our community and to minister with one another.
Our leadership guides and supports our congregation in policy development and oversight as well as program development and implementation. We are a democratic community fostering clear, open, and respectful communications, leadership development, and relationship-building among lay leadership, staff, and members.
Committed volunteers are the backbone of our church. As a congregation we recognize and respect all volunteers' endeavors and are grateful for their generosity, diversity of talents, and time. We provide training, support, follow-through, coordination, succession planning, and a communications network.
We recognize that efforts to achieve social justice are an essential aspect of our religious community. We live our Unitarian Universalist principles through engaging generously in a variety of social justice activities driven by community needs and denominational focus.
